On Thursday, February 7, 2008, the Detroit Area Council held it's 8th Annual Art & Speaking contest. This year's theme was "What America Means to Me."

Visions of Our Youth Art Contest

The Visions of Our Youth Art Contest was a fun event.  There were over 100 drawings on display throughout the months of January and February in the lobby of the Dick and Sandy Dauch Scout Center, to be enjoyed by hundreds of guests.  A reception was held on February 7, 2008 at the Scout Center to honor the participants of the contest and also to award the finalists. The night of the reception there was a humming of laughter through the halls of the Scout Center. It was rewarding to see the faces of young children stare proudly at the art work on display for others to see.  The Visions of Our Youth Honorary Chairman, Hubert Massey, put on a great presentation showcasing his artwork for the cub scouts and their families. Mr. Massey inspired the boys and parents alike many parents asking for more information about his work.  The finalists are looking forward to a tour around the city to visit Hubert’s artwork.  The smiles as the boys and families left were priceless.  The night was a tremendous success!  Congratulations to Robbie Oaks, Justin Gabis, Joe Hoelscher, Joshua Cooper, Steven Pitts and Marquise Gains they are the first place finalists of the 2008 Visions of Our Youth Art Contest!!!

Voices of Our Youth Speaking Contest

It has been said that public speaking is the number one fear of Americans.  On February 7, 2008 nine brave young boy scouts faced this fear head on delivering eloquent speeches based on the theme of What America Means to Me.  There was humor, conviction, strength, pride and hope flowing through each speech.  The master of ceremonies for the evening was Dave Dillingham, the chairman of the event.  It was a proud night for families and friends.  The top three finalists received savings bonds for up to $1,000.  Congratulations John Deighton, Andy Clark and Michon Girardot on being the top three finalists of the 2008 Voices of Our Youth Speaking Contest!!!
