Scouting For Food/Can-Do Good Turn

Bag Distribution is the first Saturday in November until Collection Day Bag Collection Day is the second Saturday in November

Note: Notice: October Roundtable, bags pick-up by units. A reminder that units participanting can pick up their allotment of bags at the October Roundtable.

Purpose: To help fight hunger in Southeast Michigan while teaching Scouts the value of ‘Doing A Good Turn Daily’.

Overview:
The Detroit Area Council joins hands with Big Boy Restaurants and WXYZ-TV in a massive community food good turn each November.

Cub Scouts and Boy Scouts distribute and collect Food Good Turn Bags in their neighborhood, asking people to join us in fighting hunger in Southeast Michigan.

Selected Big Boy Restaurants throughout the area serve as collection points for the food. We collect over 400,000 pounds of food, which will feed 1 thousands people in metropolitan Detroit.

FACTS ABOUT HUNGER:

  • An estimated 673,000 people in the tri-county area are hungry for a significant period of time in
    any given month.
  • Approximately 504,000 people (13% of the population) in the tri-county area live below the
poverty level established by the federal government.
  • Approximately half of Michigan's poor people reside in the tri-county area.

HERE'S THE PLAN:

Sign your unit up to distribute food bags to households in their assigned neighborhood a week before collection day. Pick up the food bags on the second Saturday in November and take them to a district collection point located at a designated Big Boy Restaurant in your district manned by district Scouters and Explorers.

NOTE:

If your unit run out of Scouting For Food bags to distribute, please use the Door Flyer as a substitute.  Simply click on the Door Flyer link and print as many copies as your unit needs to complete the distribution of bags
