To carry out the objectives of the Detroit Area Council,
Boy Scouts of America by making the programs of Scouting available to
community organizations as a part of their youth development programs.
The district membership committee is primarily responsible for (1)
relationship with community organizations, (2) the organization of new
units in order to provide opportunity for youth membership growth, and (3)
youth recruitment.
The mission of this group is to assist in calling on
prospective community organizations and sell them on the use of the
Scouting program as a part of their organization’s youth program. The
group assists in the organization of Scouting units.
This group also implements recruitment programs to
market the attributes of the Scouting program which attract youth members
and caring adults into the Scouting program:
- Organize additional Scouting units by establishing
relationships with community groups across our council.
- Recruit an increased percentage of young people into
the Scouting program.
- Communicate the benefits of Scouting programs to
current and potential chartered partners by developing a working
committee of community leaders to extend the Scouting program.
- Develop and manage the various programs and meetings
that support the concept of membership growth.
- Responsible for the growth and development of Scouting
programs by utilizing the Religious Relationship Committee on Scouting.
Organization
Council Membership / Relationships Committee
A Council Membership Committee Chairman will be
appointed for a one year term by the Council Vice President of Membership
/ Relationships. The council Committee is comprised of a District
Membership Chairman from each district and Chairmen of Membership
Committee projects. This committee shall meet quarterly.
District Membership Committee
An effective District Membership Committee must operate
within a "team concept" functioning on a year-round basis. An
ideal committee, in addition to the chairman, would consist of the
following individuals:
- Tiger Cub Coordinator
- Venturing Sales Chairman
- Fall Roundup Chairman
- Webelos Graduation Chairman
- New Unit Organization Chairman
In coordination with executive staff, the membership
committee is responsible for making and keeping an up-to-date inventory
of all community organizations who currently or potentially charter a
Scouting unit, as well as securing and maintaining such demographic
information (schools, TAY, etc.) as shall be needed to support the
organization of new units.
Programs
Boy Scout Spring Roundup
A Spring Roundup program will be sponsored by our
council from February 1 through June 30, annually. The purpose of this
program will be to encourage recruitment of new members and the graduation
of Webelos Scouts to take advantage of summertime Scouting programs,
thereby increasing Boy Scout retention.
Boy Scout, Cub Scout and Tiger Cub Fall Roundup
Boy Scout troops and Cub Scout packs will conduct a
joining night to meet the needs of the individual unit and corresponding
community. Special in-school presentations shall be used as a practical
recruiting technique. Every student in every elementary school and sixth
grade boys will have an opportunity to join! Joining night will be to be
held September through October yearly. Training to assist leaders in
conducting an effective recruiting night must be held in every district
in August/September.
Venturing
Year round recruiting is conducted to encourage the
involvement of youth ages 14-20 in Venturing Crews. Career Exploring or
Learning for Life, hobby and special interest, Venturing program exist to
serve our market of teenage youth and their families. Hobby and career
interests are determined through the career Interest Survey. Over 100,000
students are surveyed annually.
Retention of Youth Members
The best method for retention of our youth is quality
leadership delivering a quality program. Every effort must be made to
train and educate leaders on how to be effective in recruiting additional
leaders and delivering a quality program.
New Unit Organization
The organization of new units remains an ongoing
priority of the Detroit Area Council. At all levels special attention must
be made to utilizing chartered partner and community resources to secure
the best possible quality adult leadership for our Scouting units.
New Unit Support Materials
A packet of unit organization information materials will
be provided to the new unit organizer for each active new unit prospects.
The packet will contain new unit and membership applications, position
description sheets, program planning helps, council and district
announcements, instructions on how to operate the unit, and other helpful
tools.
