What is Junior Leader Training ?

Junior Leader Training patchThe junior leader training conference is a week-long experience conducted by the local council to give junior leaders a meaningful experience in Scouting that will enhance their knowledge and create a deeper understanding of their roles and responsibilities as leaders. Its goal is simple: to offer the participants the leadership and scouting skills necessary to be effective leaders in their troops, while helping them experience the fun and challenge of scouting at its best.

We must always remember that the training of junior leaders is the responsibility of the Scoutmaster. This conference is designed to support, not replace, the Scoutmaster’s role in the training process. Each Scout who attends will do so as a representative of his home troop and will wear the uniform and the insignia of his home troop. The conference is designed to strengthen the relationship between the scout and his scoutmaster. Participants must be nominated by their Scoutmaster, and Scoutmaster or assistant Scoutmaster are encouraged to attend the pre-course meeting. In addition, a special session is held for Scoutmasters after the end of the course.

To the boy scouts who attend, the training is "Fun", "Challenging", "Adventure", "Camping", "Excitement", "Learning Leadership", "Making New Friends", and "Gaining New Skills". In addition, as leaders, we are concerned with all the elements that keep our Troops and Patrols strong. That’s why the conference teaches its Leadership and Scouting skills within a model troop setting focusing on the patrol method.

Scoutcraft & Outdoor Skills

Participating junior leaders will learn advanced pioneering, creative ecology, specialty cooking, and many other outdoor skills. You will get to go on an overnight backpacking trip. Plus, you will learn how to make these things happen back home in your troop.

Meetings & Activities

Your youth leaders will see and participate in model troop, patrol, and patrol leader council meetings. The Scouts will learn how to use games and contests to make Scouting more fun. They will learn new skills, songs, and ways to make their troop and patrol campfires sparkle. They’ll see how to make Scouting an adventure at every meeting and campout.

Scouting at it's Best

During the course, the scouts work, play and learn as part of a patrol in a model troop. Each patrol is assigned a trained youth staff member who will work with them. The conference creates the opportunities for your junior leaders to share ideas with other youth from all over the council. They will share what is neat about their troops and patrols, learn how others do things, and get new ideas.

While a lot of fun, the JLTC is a highly structured training experience, which precludes participation in individual rank advancement, merit badge work, and the regular summer camp program. A variety of other challenging and exciting activities are included in the course. Also to gain the greatest exposure to new ideas and methods, Scouts from the same troop will be put into different patrols for the conference.

This course is a 30 hour course that can be taken by older youth or adults.
