2008 Pinewood Derby

Michigami’s Pinewood Derby a Great Success!

The 2008 Michigami District Pinewood Derby was a huge success.  Thanks to an amazing committee, it went off with only a few minor issues.  The main reason the committee has become so successful is the variety of packs that participate.  When people from different packs work together, the outcome is incredible.  Instead of having one pack that is stuck running the derby, you have different people committed to having a fantastic race for some fantastic scouts.

The track was a 6 lane beautiful wooden track brought and ran by Pack 1497 and the committee, headed by Kari Sabins (P1916) included:

Lisa Kowalzcewski (P1497)
Eric Herber (P1402)
Randy Kowalzcewski (P147)
Bill Boelke (P1954)
Norm Frechetter (P1497)
Ron Ruffini (P1954)
Justin Komody (P1497)
Richard Ardnott (P1478)
Geroge Gorospe (P1497)
Paul Magnotte (P1442)
Dave Kelly (P1497)
Lisa Jolliffe (P1927)
Dave Sabins (P1916)
Walt Barreiro (P1927)

Norm Bateman stayed with us the entire day and took pictures.  John Johnson from Saturn of Warren, stay with us and passed out goody bags (donated by Saturn of Warren) to the racers.  Red Robin donated free kid’s meal certificates to the racers and Lowe’s donated wood for the racers to make a stand for their car.  Macomb Mall, once again, hosted us free of charge.

There were 40 more racers than last year, which the committee thought might cause an issue with the one hour per race timing we had set.  This was not the case; in fact, the races went extremely smooth and left time for breaks in between.  We had an issue with the Grand Finals were the car times were tying.  At the end of all 12 heats, it worked out that we had definite winners.

1st Place E. Kowalczewski - Webelos from P1947
2nd Place T. Corbett - Wolf from P1916
3rd Place A. Zajac - Bear from P1442

Advancement-Eagle Scout Rank Reference Letters

The Eagle Scout Candidate Reference Letter is provided by the Detroit Area Council Advancement Committee as a resource for the Eagle Scout Candidate and his Unit Committee to fulfill Requirement #2 on the Eagle Scout Application.  The Eagle Scout Candidate needs to supply names and addresses for those individuals that will provide a Letter of Reference to his Board of Review on his behalf.  The Unit Committee will send out the requests for those Letters of Recommendation, designating a recipient to which they will be returned and a date to be returned by.  The Unit person responsible for receiving the Letter of Recommendation will hold them, UNOPENED, until the Board of Review convenes, where they will be opened and reviewed by that Board of Review prior to actually meeting with the Eagle Scout Candidate.  Information contained in any Letter of Reference may be the basis of questioning for the Eagle Scout Candidate but only in a manner the protects the identity and the confidentiality of the person providing the reference.

Once the Board of Review has determined the acceptability of the Eagle Scout Candidate for the Rank of Eagle Scout, all Letters of Recommendations will be destroyed.  The Scout is NOT to see the Letters of Recommendation.

The references to be provided should include:

1) A Religious Leader, a Pastor or Youth Leader (if not a practicing member of A congregation  the Mother and Father may fulfill this reference)

2)  An  Educational reference, Teacher, Administrator or Counselor
3)  An Employer reference (in lieu of a paying job someone that he
has provided a service to that might have paid him such as raking
leaves for a neighbor or volunteering for an organization)

Two additional references that will speak to his character normally in a non-scout setting such as family friends, neighbors or others that may fit into the above categories

Macomb County Warming Center wishes to give
A HUGE
“THANK YOU”

To Cub Scout Pack 1493 and Boy Scout Troop 1491 for helping the Sacred Heart Catholic Church set up its warming center for the homeless this winter. The boys did a superb job and had the facility ready in 50 minutes.

Boy Scout Troop 1999 joined in this year, and their help was greatly appreciated. They worked hard and dragged bags and bags of bedding into the Erin Presbyterian Church for the night shelter.  The Troop is looking forward to assisting again next year.

All the boys did a great job, and we are grateful to them for donating their time and energy for such a worthy cause.

A thank you also goes to the Boy Scout Michigami District for donations of cans of soup.

Please welcome Venturing Crew 1969, chartered to St. Sylvester Catholic Church in Warren! Michigami is on the rise. We now have three Venture crews and counting. Who will be next? Venture crews can enhance your troop as well as keep older boys interested in scouting longer. For more information call Stewart Ireland at (313) 897-1965, ext. 293.

What interesting things has YOUR Pack, Troop or Crew done lately? Do you have any recent Eagle Scouts? Any other awards or recognitions you would like to let the District hear about? Please send the information to the Website Coordinator, ,  and tell the whole District what makes your Troop outstanding!
