- Kids Projects at Retail Stores
The Home Depot
offers free workshops in its stores on the first Saturday of every month.
Boys and girls, accompanied by parents, can drop by during the two-hour
session and build the day's designated project, which might be a space
shuttle, toolbox, birdhouse, or one of 47 other kits. Construction may
take as little as 20 minutes, depending on each junior craftsman's ability
with a hammer.
Lowe's Home Improvement Warehouse
holds the Lowe's Kids' Clinics ("Build and Grow") on the second
Saturday of each month. These free woodworking sessions, designed for
children in grades two through five, last 45 minutes to an hour. Children
receive red aprons and a sew-on patch for each project completed. Children
must be accompanied by an adult.
HobbyTown USA
These stores have a variety of activities for kids. Events may
vary from store to store. Most offer, on request, a session on building
cars for the pinewood derby, with decals and paints provided. Other
events include national model contests with a youth division and workshops
where people build models on site for no fee or a minimal fee.
You can arrange for a store employee to present a seminar about rockets,
trains, or models at the store or at a Scout meeting place.
Michaels Kid's Club
This arts and crafts retailer has Kids Club events for children ages
5 to 12, with craft sessions every Saturday. Events are the same in
all stores. Projects take about 20 minutes; costs vary depending on
materials used. At an October session last year, kids made a Jolly Jack-O-Lantern
votive candleholder. Children must have an adult family member in the
store, but the adults often stay in the craft classroom. Michaels also
offers Free Family Fun crafting events for all ages three times a year.
